Challenge equals change

Transformation of education is on the horizon

For most dyslexic students… this is really GOOD news!!!

As difficult as these times are… challenge always leads to change. I am foreseeing many dramatic and exciting possibilities for transformation in education in the near future. As frightening as that can be, we cannot remain complacent, we must lean in and embrace this unique growth opportunity for educators and students.

Everyone was forced to quickly adapt in the blink of an eye. Overnight, remote learning became the survival mode needed to continue the school year in the midst of a global pandemic. Teachers, tutors and parents rose to this challenge and provided teaching and support opportunities to their students and must be applauded for these monumental efforts.
Remote learning however, was really about survival and not revival. It entailed few changes to the in-school learning experience. It involved mostly the same model but in a different format. This served it’s purpose well, in order to maintain some sense of normalcy for kids and to continue seamless movement through the yearly curriculum. Now, we are faced with even greater challenges in the face of continued uncertainty. Most schools are being asked to prepare for three different scenarios for the fall. Regardless of which model needs to be used to address the situation at that time, a portion of it will continue as e-learning. This is completely different than remote learning and will require creativity and work to design curriculum for this approach… not only in using a new virtual platform but changes in how and what is delivered to students.

Once again, adapting quickly and effectively will be necessary… but perhaps not always perfectly… and therein lies the incredible opportunity for growth, both for educators and their students!

Moving away from a one-size-fits-all education and possibly away from antiquated standardized testing would certainly be great news for dyslexic students and would benefit ALL students! This could lead to a more adaptive path of personal learning tailored to each individual student with a focus on their interests. Project-based learning in areas of a student’s interest would lead to greater engagement and learning opportunities for ALL students.

Setting a goal -> facing challenges -> adaptive thinking -> fixing problems -> learning -> growth -> figuring out ways to solve problems -> attaining the goal!!

SUCCESS!!

This type of approach requires rapid spontaneous creativity to solve problems and remain solution focused.

and this is SOOOOOO exciting because dyslexics are perfectly suited to this approach.

This way of learning taps into all the strengths and skills of dyslexia
  • problem solving
  • thinking outside the box
  • creativity
  • innovative
  • resilient
  • team work
  • communicative
  • collaborative
  • hard workers

These are the skills required for the future workforce

FINALLY, when embracing this type of educational setting… dyslexics will not only thrive but they will shine and lead the way!!!
